Spot the difference?

Once again, the Met in the person of Cressida Dick are spouting the line that Jean Charles De Menezes and Hussain Osman looked “very” alike.

Naturally, one can see the striking similarities, and urge caution on all our friends of the family Anatidae.

A Nasty Shock to the System

Mel Gibson to star in Edge of Darkness remake

Move away from any hard surfaces and sharp objects, and please free to don protective headgear in case of work surface/cranial interface, but in news which confirms that history the second time around IS farce, Edge of Darkness is being movie-fied. Starring Mel Gibson. Mel ****ing Gibson. In Bob Peck's shoes. Presumably they'll get Paris Hilton in the Joanne Whalley role, and get Dolph Lundgren to play Jedburgh....
How utterly IDIOTIC is it possible for an industry to be?

More Apple fail

So Apple do it again. In the guise of another "update" they shove Safari down your throat. DO NOT WANT.  OK, it's not how the dialog ACTUALLY looks, but it definitely should....

Help for Heroes

A chap called Lowe on Hexus posted the following:

"Just posting this up to raise a bit of awareness and hopefully get some sponsorship money for a friend of mine.

One of my friends Mike is a Captain in the Royal Engineers - you may remember me posting about him a few months back. He's been serving in Afghanistan, and unfortunately was injured at the end of last year when an RPG air burst about 6 feet from him. He took shrapnel in both arms and legs, and was in a pretty bad way for some time. He's back on his feet now, but is still left with some paralysis in his limbs. It's a miracle he's walking at all - and he puts a lot of it down to the help he received from the 'Help for Heroes' charity.

As a thank you to this wonderful charity, Mike is going to attempt the Bataan Death march. This is a full 26.2 mile desert marathon in New Mexico under extreme conditions, and he's doing it in military gear with a 35lb bergen on his back - and aiming for a sub 6 hour time. This event is more than a challenge for someone fully able, let alone someone who was held together with staples a few months ago! More details of the event can be found here:

Bataan Memorial Death March

Please dig deep and help sponsor Mike, so this brilliant charity can continue helping our wounded heros and their families. You can sponsor him directly by clicking here:

Thanks! "

So I'm reposting it here - if anyone happens upon this, please place hand in pocket, remove credit card...yes, just like that...click on linky and hand over your cash.

Blu-Ray Lobbyists Just Can't Help It...

Putting their foot in their mouths, I mean:

BBC News Technology Section

"Frank Simonis, of Philips and the European chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association, said the division of Blu-ray players into potentially three camps was "not an ideal situation".

But he denied that consumers would be confused.

"Whether you have a profile 1.0, or profile 1.1 machine, the playback is not disturbed. It's the high definition playback that consumers are seeking."

Philips has just released its first player which supports profile 1.1 and Mr Simonis confirmed that older players could not be upgraded.

Mr Simonis said the reason Blu-ray backers had launched players which could not be upgraded was one of timing.

He said: "The discussions relating to features took place at a point in time when every hardware company had frozen the architecture for their first generation of players.

"We needed to create momentum and get the players on the market. If we had postponed launch to add in the hardware for the latest features, we would not be in the situation we have today." "

Two thoughts leap to mind:

1. This is just the same crap that Sony pulled when they claimed that the UK/Euro PS3 was "just as powerful" as the US/Japanese version.

2. If all I'm after is the hi-def playback, and in fact all the additional "features" are just padding, then you just gave me a reason to go HD-DVD, since they actually have a feature-complete standard and feature-complete players to go with it.
